Shigofumi ~ Letters from the departed February 5th

Filed in Shigofumi, 2008, Episode Recap, Series First-Look.

Also referred to as Shigofumi ~ Stories of Last Letter or just Shigofumi (シゴフミ).

Produced by Bandai, the series follows the many stories of Fumika, the mail carrier, as she journeys the city, among other places, delivering the last words of those who’ve passed on. Fans of Shinigami no Ballad will love this show.

While I see the slight hint to Shinigami no Ballad, it’s more a feeling then a similarity. As opposed to following the struggles of kind individuals, the story portrays the dark side of humanity. From abortions to random suicides, the show is a dark and mysterious one yet at times vibrant with colors. The main character Fumika is no Momo, sparked with personality and filled with “life” her personal story is intertwined with the many sub-plots of the show.

The carriers of Shigofumi are dead people. They are not divine, they are simply people who have passed away and have been tasked with this for certain reasons. They are bestowed with unholy strength and skill but their true power lies in their staffs, which are capable of the impossible, to the extent of manipulating nature.
However, it is forbidden for them to take any action that influences the life and death of humans. All be it, that is not much of a burden as even Fumika cares not if the people she meets live or die.

Warning! Screens, Fanservice & Summary details follow.

Intro Arc (Letter #1) “Confession”

The first part of two, the episode introduces Fumika and her assistant as they deliver shigofumi, letters from the dead. We meet Shouta, who is secretly building a rocket. Regrettably his experiments don’t go very well. Besides Shouta, the other lead of the mini-arc is a girl, Ayasse, who faces family struggles as she tries to deal with the sudden death of her father. But this is only story would have us believe.

Intro Arc ~ part 2 (Letter #2) “Rocket”

Continuing the story from the first episode at the point where Ayasse killed Shouta, the story focuses on her dark past, as she was abused by her father. We find out she killed him to protect her little sister to suffer the same fate she did. Succumbing to desperation and pursued by the police she cuts her hair and runs away, but after facing Fumika turns back and returns to Shouta’s hideout.

Letter #3 “Friends”

Set in the school setting, this one episode story follows the life of Kotake, and his question “What will happen if I jump in front of the train?”. Boring as it may sound the episode tries to illustrate random suicides, a obscure form of incident which normally gets attributed to school bullying or other such environment problems. So does Kotake die.

Letter #4 “Tears”

This time we follow the story of a child abandoned by her mother, for a love interest. The mother we find was later abused and likely killed by the man. The episode spins in circles before concluding the story. At it’s highlight we meet with happy and enrgetic Chiaki and her strict and stiff staff Matoma, needless to say they complement each other perfectly. But in the end who’s the goner this episode.

Letter #5 “I’m Home”

This episode follows the story of a cat. Fumika and Chiaki both receive orders to send a letter to this cat. We eventually find out the cat belonged to two elderly people who’ve passed away, and the letters contained their last gift to it. But what was it that they both sent it.
