Shigofumi ~ Letters from the departed February 5th

Filed in Shigofumi, 2008, Episode Recap, Series First-Look. No Comments.

Also referred to as Shigofumi ~ Stories of Last Letter or just Shigofumi (シゴフミ).

Produced by Bandai, the series follows the many stories of Fumika, the mail carrier, as she journeys the city, among other places, delivering the last words of those who’ve passed on. Fans of Shinigami no Ballad will love this show.

While I see the slight hint to Shinigami no Ballad, it’s more a feeling then a similarity. As opposed to following the struggles of kind individuals, the story portrays the dark side of humanity. From abortions to random suicides, the show is a dark and mysterious one yet at times vibrant with colors. The main character Fumika is no Momo, sparked with personality and filled with “life” her personal story is intertwined with the many sub-plots of the show.

The carriers of Shigofumi are dead people. They are not divine, they are simply people who have passed away and have been tasked with this for certain reasons. They are bestowed with unholy strength and skill but their true power lies in their staffs, which are capable of the impossible, to the extent of manipulating nature.
However, it is forbidden for them to take any action that influences the life and death of humans. All be it, that is not much of a burden as even Fumika cares not if the people she meets live or die.

Warning! Screens, Fanservice & Summary details follow.

Intro Arc (Letter #1) “Confession”

The first part of two, the episode introduces Fumika and her assistant as they deliver shigofumi, letters from the dead. We meet Shouta, who is secretly building a rocket. Regrettably his experiments don’t go very well. Besides Shouta, the other lead of the mini-arc is a girl, Ayasse, who faces family struggles as she tries to deal with the sudden death of her father. But this is only story would have us believe.

Pushing aside for a moment the fact this becomes a very sweat little love story from episode 3 onward the show is in essence a mahou soujo series. But it’s not your average take of the genre, for it breaks the ice and does things a little bit differently then it’s counterparts. We all know the rules of mahou joujo series, well this series breaks some really significant ones.

This time it’s one from Kazuki Nakashima writer of Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann. Initially meant as a stage play this piece has been adapted into a anime. The character designs are similar to those in Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann, and in the overall theme some resemblance does exist. However most of the resemblence end there.

This is Japanese Classic Horrorfic, so beware.

Compared to normal anime shows the basic ideas and the animation may be frightening by themselves; the animation style may seem horrid, but that is not the point the series tries to bring across, this is a horror after all. For anyone intending to follow this show, I suggest keeping an open mind, the show is not as simplistic as it’s animation would have you believe. A huge focus has placed on the inner horrors that surround us every day.

That said many of it’s good points may not reach the audience if the audience is not prepared to take them in. I’m not really into horrors and particularly not this genre so I’m not going to pursue this show any further.

Wangan Midnight July 29th

This is a Need For Speed: Underground 2 style anime, with characters in a 80’s look and feel. If you like characters like fuzzy brow from Naruto, you’ll like the designs. The animation is normal 1980 for most of the scenes were the character isn’t driving. When he is driving, we get CGs very similar to Underground 2’s graphics; hence why I mentioned it earlier. For a few moments looking at the city and other elements I was actually pondering: did they copy/paste replays from the game gameplay?

The story was/is relatively unexciting, although perhaps better then envisioned at first sight. Of course in episode two whatever little hope I had got shattered. There is the chance that was just a fluke, but odds say episode one was the fluke.
